Saline County Fairplex

The Saline County Quorum Court in a vote of 10-2 to move forward with the special election for the Saline County Fairplex.  Jill Jones is the promoter of the Fairplex and works for the City of Benton Advertising and Promotions division.  She tells me this will bring to the county 300 permanent jobs. She also says she has already gathered the funds to pay for the special election, but she can't tell me who paid $50,000.00.  

I divided the 50 million it will cost to build over 6 years and that comes to $27,777.77 per year per job. But we should factor in the 5% interest it will cost the county to fund that amount and we go in the hole for the first 3 years.

Tom Lish -Justice of the Peace- represents Hot Springs Village in Saline County.  He thinks we need the special election because the voters get confused in the general election about what their yes vote actually says.  In other words folks, he thinks you are too dumb to vote against the measure in the general election.

Since the State has a problem getting the Statutes online, I am still researching this, but I understand every special election has to be paid for by the body that called it.  The question begs to be asked, "Why didn't the county pay for the special election?"  We have 30 days after the election to contest it.

When will the madness end?  We must stop spending money on what we don't have for things we don't need! 

update on town hall meeting City of Benton

Last night at Benton City council  meeting the aldermen voted to table the drainage fee. Greg White showed his true colors and then resigned as chairman of the drainage committee because they tabled the vote and sent it back to committee. This was a direct result of our involvement in public opinion against this initiative. BE PROUD that you attended and YOUR MESSAGE is heard!

WE NEED SOLUTIONS

It's time to stop the blame game. Were waiting to hear the plan to put a end to this madness. Seem's that were adding to the deficit not subtracting from it and adding new programs we can't afford

Saline Wet or Dry?

Mysaline website has begun a new campaign to make Saline County Wet.  Our illustrious Alderman Lee has commented that "DWI arrests are lower according to local police records"  He thinks we need to talk this up and get this passed. 

Ronald Laurie thinks there's too many elderly people who vote against anything to do with money. 

Steve is new to the county and thinks alcohol is here because of the private clubs that have liquor licenses.
"Maybe we need to be collecting revenue from it," he says.

Perry Favor of the Dry County Coalition has a different viewpoint.  DWI arrests are up since the advent of  the private clubs with liquor.  You can email Perry here if you want to join this coalition perrydfaver@aol.com

Benton Town Hall of Feb. 17th, 2010

I attended the Town Hall meeting last pm at Benton City Hall. I must say, after 20 minutes of this meeting, several things were glaringly clear. It seems that the city of Benton has issued permits to real estate developers for plans that have caused more than 20 drainage problems for the city. The city has a 1/4 cent sales tax to pay for streets and drainage that was enacted by the voters of the city.

The drainage problems above include craters in some yards where the drainage culvert has disintregated and left holes in it's place. Other problems are undermining of the house or building itself due to water running under them. The time for inspection and sending the problems back to the developers has passed. Now the residents want the city to pay for the structural damage with a fee on everyone's utility bill. Since some residents have lived in these areas more than 5 years, the likelyhood of winning a court battle from the developer is unlikely.

To add insult to injury, the city council now has used the money from the street and drainage fund to pay for the lower military Road Project against the will of the voters. There is no money to fix the drainage because it is being spent on an 18 million dollar grant to widen and develop lower Military Road. It cannot be scrapped because the city has spent 2 million dollars of the street money and will have to pay it back if the Military Road project doesn't go forward.

Folks, we have more problems now than just sending some kids on an expensive field trip to Washington. Isn't it time we changed leadership and hold those who have squandered our money accountable?

I went to the Saline county Quorum court meeting last Tuesday. They voted to spend 384,000
on a new air conditioning and lighting system to save money. They didn't need a new system but voted to accept the government grant anyway. We need to speak out against this kind of irresponsible spending starting right here at home. Write a letter to your District JP and let him know how you feel. If he won't listen, find someone who is running that will.
